As you may have guessed from the somewhat haphazard title, this year’s NaNoWriMo has been a bit of a scramble. This is what happens when you think you’re all set and then some extra tutoring work comes along on the 1st of November…
I struggled on with the schedule I’d set myself for a few days before realising that, with my days now organised as they were, I was basically setting myself up to fail. I’d pencilled in 3000 words for what were now tutoring days, and while I could probably pull off both things on some days, I don’t think the result would have been pretty. 😉 So this week I rejigged my word count, redistributing it to do more words at weekends, and currently I’m sitting at just over 17K – a third of the way there.
As for the book itself, A Fete Worse Than Death, I’m cautiously pleased. This one should have more red herrings than Murder At The Playgroup, and I’ve introduced additional village characters, plus a couple of outsiders who are a lot of fun. However, I am thinking that when I finish this book I need to put together a series bible. I forget what colour characters’ eyes are, and sometimes even their last names, and this is only book 3!
Oh, and this year I have NO VISCOUNT BISCUITS. I need to do something about this, pronto. No wonder I’ve been struggling!

- Writing days: 11 (None missed! Yay!)
- Dodgy additions to internet search history for research purposes: 2 (so far)
- Murders (in the book, obvs): 0 (again, so far)
- Cups of tea: Don’t even go there!
Here endeth the first NaNo update. Hopefully I’ll still be swimming along next weekend, and past the halfway mark (25K). Fingers crossed.

You’re right about needing a series bible or something. When we started the Land of the Three Seas I started putting together a gazetteer as we went along. It now runs to an amazing amount of words and contains all sorts of little incidents and background stuff which can be so helpful

all it is is several word documents, each is a table and I just stick new stuff into the appropriate table in the right place alphabetically. Because you are dealing with ‘real world’ then you probably just need three documents, people, places and institutions
The description of a person is often that given by another character so we have
Allamintega Simply the most beautiful creature who ever walked this earth, tall and lithe, her hair a purple cloud, her eyes like twin emeralds. Ah me, but it only you could see her as she works. She can fillet a mazzoon in the twinkling of an eye, and to watch her stirring the sauce vat is an inspiration! I have moved into new lodgings to be close to her, above the fried fish shop at the bottom of Isinglass Alley

Beating you on the murders but not the word count! We may be level pegging on tea consumption. And I know what you mean about eye colours etc.
